2. Maxwell equations in vacuum:

  • Plane wave solutions,

  • Real and evanescent waves

  • Polarization: Stokes parameters and Jones calculus

  • Propagation of 1D wave packets

3. Fourier transform and plane-wave expansion for the electromagnetic fields

  • Scalar and vector potentials

  • Hertz vector potentials

  • Energy, linear and angular momentum densities

4. Scalar optical beams with nonplanar wave fronts

  • Angular spectrum representation

  • Paraxial wave equation

  • From scalar to vector solutions: cross-polarization

5. Hermite-Gauss and Laguerre-Gauss solutions of the paraxial wave equation

  • Quantum-like formalism for paraxial waves

6. From the density matrix to the coherency matrix: Statistical optics

  • Amplitude and intensity correlations

  • Speckles and theory of partially coherent light

The exercises will mainly consist in applications of the concepts presented in the lectures.
