Recommended knowledge: Basic knowledge of electromagnetism

Inhalt
Photonic and plasmonic crystals are characterized by a periodic structure, the lattice parameter of which is comparable with the wavelength of light. Due to interference of the incident and scattered light, the light propagation in these materials is modified and a distinct modal structure with spectral intervals being forbidden for light propagation is formed. Depending on the material and structural parameters, different physical phenomena take place in all-dielectric crystals like diffraction, refraction, beam steering, change of polarization and inhibition of spontaneous light emission. In metal-based crystals excitations are carried by localized plasmons giving rise to strong light confinement, extraordinary transmission and absorption, etc.
The objective of this course is to understand the physics of photonic and plasmonic crystals, to assess the effects of disorder, to learn about different preparation techniques and to get information about recent developments in the field. The emphasis will be done on the experimental investigation of the optical properties of these architectures.
